City Introduction
Located in central Shanxi to the east of the Fenhe River, Jinzhong lies at the heart of Jin culture and is known as “the Hinterland of Shanxi and Hometown of Shanxi Merchants”. Famous Scenic Spots in Jinzhong

1. Pingyao Ancient City

Situated in Pingyao County, Jinzhong, Pingyao Ancient City is the best-preserved ancient county town dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties in China. As a World Cultural Heritage Site, it serves as a model of ancient cities built by the Han ethnic group. First constructed in the Western Zhou Dynasty and extensively expanded in the Ming Dynasty, the ancient city retains the complete layout of city walls, streets, residential courtyards, shops and temples of an ancient county, authentically reproducing the urban style of northern China during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Once the headquarters of Shanxi merchants in the Qing Dynasty, it witnessed the founding of numerous draft banks that once controlled national financial circulation, earning it the reputation of “China’s No.1 Financial City in the Qing Dynasty”.

Massive ancient city walls encircle the whole town. Four main avenues, eight minor streets and seventy-two winding alleyways crisscross inside. Rishengchang Draft Bank, China’s first draft bank, marks the origin of modern finance. The ancient city is dotted with traditional quadrangle courtyards, time-honored shops, Confucian Temples and City God Temples. The ancient buildings feature neat structures and exquisite wood, brick and stone carvings. 2. Qiao Family Courtyard

Located in Qi County, Jinzhong, Qiao Family Courtyard, also known as “Zhongtang Mansion”, was the residence of Qing-dynasty merchant Qiao Zhiyong and represents an outstanding masterpiece of traditional northern residential architecture. Construction started in the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty, and multiple expansions gradually formed the grand architectural complex built with wealth accumulated from the Qiao family’s business ventures. A popular local saying goes: “For imperial architecture visit the Forbidden City; for civilian residences visit the Qiao Family Courtyard”, which fully demonstrates its outstanding architectural status.

The entire courtyard follows a rigorous layout enclosed by high walls, with orderly courtyards unfolding layer upon layer. The complex consists of hundreds of houses decorated with top-tier wood, brick and stone carvings across Shanxi. The carvings adopt diverse themes with auspicious implications and display superb craftsmanship. The architecture embodies the defensive characteristics of northern dwellings and carries family values of valuing education and integrity. The Qiao Family Courtyard intuitively showcases the daily life of an eminent Shanxi merchant clan in the Qing Dynasty and inherits the values pursued by Shanxi merchants. 3. Wang Family Courtyard

Located in Lingshi County, Jinzhong, Wang Family Courtyard was built by the Wang clan of Lingshi spanning the Ming and Qing dynasties. Boasting a far larger scale than Qiao Family Courtyard, it is hailed as the “Folk Palace”. The Wang family prospered through farming and commerce, combining official careers with trade. They spent hundreds of years constructing the residential complex, which spreads along mountain slopes with extraordinary momentum. Planned strictly in accordance with traditional rituals, the layout distinguishes hierarchies of seniority and status, fully reflecting the ancient patriarchal system.

The architectural complex comprises two major zones: Hongmen Castle and Gaojiaya. Thousands of cave dwellings and houses stack up on the hillside. The cave residences integrate features of northern quadrangle courtyards and display distinctive Shanxi local styles. Neat alleys and towering castle walls satisfy both living and defensive demands. Couplets, horizontal inscribed boards and stone carvings can be found everywhere, recording family precepts. Compared with the delicate Qiao Family Courtyard, Wang Family Courtyard presents greater grandeur. It completely reflects the living patterns of powerful bureaucratic and merchant clans in northern China during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It stands as the pinnacle of Shanxi residential architecture and an important heritage of human settlement culture on the Loess Plateau in Jinzhong.

4. Mianshan Scenic Area

Known as Jieshan, Mianshan is situated in Jiexiu City, Jinzhong. It is the birthplace of the Qingming and Cold Food Festival culture, integrating natural scenery, historical legends and ancient religious buildings. During the Spring and Autumn Period, Jie Zitui assisted Duke Wen of Jin before retreating into seclusion on Mianshan and sacrificed his life here. To commemorate his loyalty and righteousness, Duke Wen issued an order to ban fire and consume cold food, from which the Cold Food Festival originated. Therefore, Mianshan is regarded as the root of Cold Food Festival culture.

Mianshan features precipitous peaks. Numerous hanging temples such as Yunfeng Temple and Dalu Palace cling to steep cliffs, forming rare spectacular sights. Clear springs flow amid lush pines and cypresses, creating serene and magnificent natural landscapes. Since the Northern Wei Dynasty, the mountain has served as a sacred site for Buddhism and Taoism with enduring incense for over a thousand years. Mianshan perfectly integrates the loyalty culture of the Cold Food Festival, Buddhist and Taoist heritage, cliffside ancient architecture and Taihang mountain scenery. It is not only a cultural sacred place for tracing the origin of traditional folk customs, but also a distinctive tourist destination at the western foot of the Taihang Mountains.

5. Yuci Old Town

Located in Yuci District, Jinzhong, Yuci Old Town is the origin of Jinzhong’s urban culture with a city history of more than 1,400 years. Since ancient times, Yuci has been a vital transportation hub in Shanxi and an early trading distribution center for Shanxi merchants. The old town preserves a large number of ancient buildings dating from the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, including the county yamen, Confucian Temple, City God Temple and Fengming Academy. These constructions fully restore the layout of administrative, educational and sacrificial functions in an ancient local city.

Yuci County Yamen enjoys a grand scale and complete specifications, ranking among China’s best-preserved ancient county government offices. The City God Temple features exquisite structures and well-preserved ancient painted decorations. Streets retain the texture of an ancient county lined with traditional shops full of lively atmosphere. Unlike Pingyao which thrives on commerce, Yuci Old Town carries more traditions of ancient local governance and Confucian education. Less commercialized, it retains a primitive and solemn charm. Concentrating the millennial urban development history of Jinzhong, it is an important scenic spot for learning about ancient local administration and folk culture in Shanxi.
