Famous Scenic Spots in Yangquan

1. Memorial Hall of the Hundred Regiments Offensive (Shinao Mountain Scenic Area)

Shinao Mountain is situated in the western suburbs of Yangquan, home to the Memorial Hall of the Hundred Regiments Offensive, the most important red landmark commemorating this campaign nationwide. In 1940, the Eighth Route Army launched the large-scale Hundred Regiments Offensive in North China. The blocking battle on Shinao Mountain, the critical opening engagement of the campaign, took place here. Relying on mountainous positions, soldiers of the Eighth Route Army tenaciously resisted Japanese troops, effectively covering the main force to sabotage transportation lines. This battle composed a glorious chapter of the behind-the-enemy-line resistance in North China.

With towering ridges and lush forests, Shinao Mountain features the solemn Monument to the Hundred Regiments Offensive standing amid the mountains. 2. Niangziguan Scenic Area

Located in the northeastern part of Pingding County, Niangziguan stands on the border of Shanxi and Hebei. It is a renowned pass on the Great Wall, honored as “the Ninth Pass under Heaven”. Backed by steep Taihang cliffs and facing the Mianhe River Valley, the pass occupies a strategically vital position, controlling the thoroughfare from eastern Shanxi to Hebei. Legend has it that Princess Pingyang of the Tang Dynasty once stationed troops here, hence the name Niangziguan (Ladies’ Pass). 3. Cangshan Scenic Area

Located in Yu County, Yangquan, Cangshan, formerly known as Yushan, is a world-famous sacred site of loyalty and righteousness culture. During the Spring and Autumn Period, the tragedy of the Orphan of Zhao took place in the State of Jin. Loyal adherents Cheng Ying and Gongsun Chujiu hid the orphan of the Zhao Clan in these mountains for fifteen years. This timeless story of loyalty has been passed down for millennia, bringing widespread fame to Cangshan. Later generations built temples to worship these righteous men, gradually forming a grand complex of ancient buildings.

Encircled by mountains, the scenic area features precipitous cliffs and deep caves with unique landforms. Numerous shrines, plank roads and cliff carvings scatter across the mountains. Built against the cliffs, the Cangshan Temple consists of layered halls and towering ancient cypresses. 4. Guanyu Temple (Pingding)

Situated in Guanshan Town, Pingding County of Yangquan, Pingding Guanyu Temple is a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level. It is the largest and best-preserved Yuan-dynasty temple dedicated to Guan Yu in North China. First constructed in the Northern Song Dynasty and extensively rebuilt in the Yuan Dynasty with renovations in later ages, it retains typical structural features of Yuan wooden architecture, serving as a rare physical specimen for researching ancient northern buildings of the Yuan Dynasty.

The temple boasts a neat layout with a clear central axis, towering halls and primitive, elegant bracket sets. Preserved statues and murals inside embody the belief culture of Guan Yu. 5. Hongyan Ridge Scenic Area

Hongyan Ridge Scenic Area is located in Yu County, Yangquan, celebrated for marvelous karst caves and forest scenery of the Taihang Mountains, known as “Karst Gallery of the Taihang Mountains”. Situated in the middle section of the Taihang Mountains, the land has undergone hundreds of millions of years of geological evolution, forming an extensive and complex underground cave cluster. Continuous ridges and lush vegetation on the ground create a dual landscape system of surface forests and underground caves.
